Late announcement about sponsors: Thank you Codemate and Forum Nokia!

Hey,

I just realized that I did not post the proper "thank you's" for the two new sponsorships we recently got for the Oulu Open Hack. So, without further ado, thank you Forum Nokia and Codemate for pitching in and making the first Oulu Open Hack event come true!

In addition to supporting the practicalities, the Forum Nokia guys have promised to throw in a shiny C7 device for the best hack applying QML!

Ok folks, sleep well, and be ready for an intensive 24 hours of hacking to get something working! Remember, it starts tomorrow (11.11.2010 at 11:00).

Getting the word out

Openhack_poster_web

We've spent the last couple of days telling the world about our upcoming hackday. This includes updated web landing page at ouluopenhack.org, major updates to wiki and blog, printing and spreading posters around Oulu University and Nokia campus, getting the T-shirt design together, preparing some awesome prizes for brave hackers, tweeting a bit…

The poster is also up for grabs! It's a 300dpi A4 PNG file. Download, print and spread!

Care to sponsor OuluOpenHack?

Hey,

Now that we've got venue, we've got just a few more things to sort out about the practicalities.

Given that the hackers attending will be awfully busy with their code, it is just fair to arrange food, drinks, stickers, t-shirts and other swag for their convenience. This is what we need some sponsorship for. Instead of taking money directly, I'm proposing that companies willing to sponsor this good cause would contact me (kristian.luoma(at)gmail.com) if they wish to participate by taking care of some of the things we need.

List of things we need:

  • Sponsor Package 1: Food & Drink (incl. pizzas, beer, sodas, energy drinks for 100 people)
  • Sponsor Package 2: T-shirts, stickers and print-outs (t-shirts and stickers for 100, print-outs for the venue (max 10 A2 posters))
  • Sponsor Package 3: Prizes (you can be creative here, but there should be at least one memorable prize for the winning team/individual)

If you think you could pitch in and take care off some of the above, again, contact me.

99% Web? Ok, not so.

Hey,

Some people have questioned the choice of platform to be 99% web. It is not so. It is very likely that most hacks will be web-based, in form or another... but if you want to do your Hack using Arduino (like someone will be..) go ahead!

Or if you love doing ninja-tricks on Mobile platforms then .. so be it!

In short: we don't want to force you to run web hacks in Hack day. You may, but you don't have to. :) ok?

Questions & Answers about #OuluOpenHack

Hey,

We've been stormed by questions - apparently the concept of a Hack Day is still a bit new and needs explaining.

So let's do a Q&A:

What is the theme for the hackfest? Is there a theme?

Well.. Looking our friendly list of APIs, .. I think we could do a theme: "GEO". Is anyone against it? For it? If yes, then let's make it "GEO" (as in, anything LBS, Geolocation, etc. related).

I don't think people will be pissed of  if you slip off from the theme thou'.

What APIs are in use?

Anything you like. We'll keep a list of APIs we like for your reference here . Also, we'd like to promote APIs that are from start-ups near you. If you have an API, your free to suggest it to be presented in the event.

What do you do in a hack day? And why?

You hack with SW. You blend data and APIs and your own code to create something new. A shiny demo that does something that makes people say: Wow!

For who do you hack? Who benefits from this?

Line 10:

Mainly: for yourself and to learn. You do it because you feel like creating new stuff is awesome. You'll feel good about it because you pushed to the limits. You'll learn new things, new tricks and new faces. You'll learn more about new APIs and you'll find a code hacker hero from yourself.

So, you benefit from this - my dear hacker.

If you are not a hacker, but an API provider - you'll get instant feedback about how hackers feel for your API.

If you are a potential employer - well, you'll see good candidates to work for you.

If you are a sponsor, you'll get good will.

Who should take part?

Anyone capable of hacking a bit, dreaming a lot and spending a 24 hour period with peer gurus.

Why take part to begin with?

Go to Line 10.

What platform are we hacking on?

Umm.. good question. I'd say, 99% web.

Isn't hacking bad... and evil and illegal??

No, my son, that is called cracking. Cracking is evil. Hacking is good. Learn the difference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_cracking vs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_%28computing%29

Hope this helps. Let me know if you're wondering something. Check out the Wiki too: http://ouluhack.pbworks.com/
